September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair 2017

Greetings

I am happy to announce the opening of the “September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair 2016”. This is the seventh consecutive year for the Japan Jewellery Association (JJA) to take part in the fair. JJA is the representative of a trade group in Japan, and once again this year it showcases world-class jewellery of which Japan can be truly proud.

The theme is “Presence of Japanese Jewellery”, showing Japan’s skills, design, and quality to the world.

Tradition combined with a strong aesthetic sense has long been cultivated in Japan, and Japanese craftsmanship has carried on this tradition in a low-key way.

A cultivated mind and an affluent lifestyle can be achieved by cultivating the beauty in things instead of relying exclusively on technique. Especially when it comes to jewellery, the balance between skill, beauty, and quality is essential. If there is no balance between these three aspects, it doesn’t matter how beautiful the jewellery is, it is simply difficult to wear, and it doesn’t matter how skillfully it was created, if it isn’t beautiful, nobody will be drawn to it. Present-day Japanese jewellery brings to life traditional techniques, to create exquisitely crafted jewellery with a sense of respect, and incorporates universal design to create decorative objects with functionality and cutting-edge technology. The same spirit is found in manufactured products as well as hand-made ones. Just because something is mass-produced, it doesn’t mean corners should be cut – this is the philosophy behind manufacture in Japan.

With sponsorship once again from last year’s sponsor, the Japan Jewellery Association, we are exhibiting prize-winning items from the JJA Jewellery Design Awards 2016, now recognized as Japan’s premier jewellery design contest. We are delighted to be able to present a new direction for Japan – a combination of traditional Japanese skills cultivated down the ages, and contemporary design.

We are confident that everyone will reap the rewards of this new direction in the future.

On a final note, I would like to make it known that an Information Center has been set up within the JJA, to provide support for Japanese companies taking part in the Fair. Please don’t hesitate to make use of its services.
